Viking netmen at Carleton Invitational; must stop seven teams to grab crown
Along with six other squads, the Ole netmen venture to Carleton today and tomorrow to play in the annual Carleton Invitational Tennis Tournament. Tuesday the team travels to Luther college to test the Vikings. Last week-end, the Lions split in two matches as they were downed by Ripon 7-2, but then bounced hack to edge Lawrence 5-4.
St. Thomas and Grinnell head a field of eight at the Carl Tourney. The Tommies have won the championship the last three years and the Pioneers are the Midwest Conference champion. The rest of the field includes Carleton, St. Olaf, Hamline, Macalester, Gustavus and Mankato State.
Each school is allowed four singles and two doubles entries and each participates in his own bracket so there will be six championships in all. The Ole entries will be Gordy Mortenson, Paul Rasmussen, Dave Olson and Ron Dahl.
The balance of the Ole squad will give the Frosh a taste of action as they take on the youthful netmen at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow.
In the Ripon match the only Ole winners were Guy Stoddard in the single's and the doubles combination of Stoddard and Ron Dahl. The match was held in the Carleton gymnasium and the playing conditions were strange and new to the Oles. Only one set of eight games was played. Mortenson, Rasmussen, Olson and Root, all were defeated in singles play as were the doubles teams of Mortenson and Rasmussen and Olson and Larry Christensen.
The Oles rebounded the next day, however, and tipped Lawrence. Mortenson defeated Dan Schyler 6-3, 6-3 while Dave Olson edged Tom Hurvis 8-6, 2-6, 6-4. Guy Stoddard continued his winning ways as he defeated Quinton Sharpe 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Rasmussen, Dahl and Root all were defeated.
The doubles teams of Mortenson and Rasmussen and Olson and Stoddard both won their matches while Root and Dale Sorenson were edged 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
